The poem Sympathy was written by Paul Laurence Dunbar refering to a "caged bird". Dunbar was a son was the son of slaves who escaped using the Underground Railroad. He worked as a writer and published many poems and short stories. Dunbar explored the themes of slavery and slavery and life in the South. The subject of the poem is a caged bird. The repeated words an phrases are "I know why, A caged bird, and first". The structure of the poem are 3 stanzas in 7 lines in each. The rhyme scheme is "abaabcc". What I liked about the poem is that it's is easy to read. The poet is comparing the caged bird to a slave. The mood of the poem is that it is sad in some parts and angry in others. The poet repeats the pharses "I know why the caged bird sings" in the poem because he wants the reader to know how he feels too. Alas makes me feel that he has been caged also. When I read the poem I felt sympathy and angry. The poet knows that slavery is cruel, and that is unfair to slaves/birds to be held and not to get free.
